Staci’s Top 10 Stylish Tips

Staci womens home

Staci Henderson was recently nominated as one of Houston’s best dressed by CultureMap’s Stylemaker Awards. At Tootsie’s on October 14th, she won the loudest applause, which moved her to tears. Staci is not only stylish, but she also has a big heart. She dedicates a great deal of her time raising funds for various Houston charities including Houston Children Give Back, Love146, Jamie’s Hope, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Fresh Arts and Learn Grow Lead. In August, she rocked the runway to support The Women’s Home at their annual re-New and re-Do Fashion show.

Staci is also a long time Houston resident and graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in English Linguistics. Not only does she stay busy with fundraising, but she is also a fabulous wife and mother of five children. Staci manages to do all of these things and maintain a beautiful sense of style, which is always on trend. This is why I asked Staci to share 10 stylish tips.

Staci’s Top 10 Fashion Tips

1) Be yourself. If you don’t like skinny jeans, or if the high waist trend doesn’t suit you, feel free to opt out. Know your body and what looks good on you, and don’t let yourself fall prey to every trend.

2) Find a good tailor. The way clothing fits on your body (or doesn’t) says a lot about your attention to detail. Make sure things are the correct length and width. You can add ten ponds to yourself with bunched up clothing or visible undergarment lumps and bumps.

3) Lingerie with lace and bows is fantastic for your love life. Nude “no show” bras, underwear and shape wear are your friend.

4) Only flaunt one body party at a time. Great legs? Show them…but not with cleavage and a bare back as well. You can go from classy to trashy in a minute.

5) Work with what god gave you. Blessed with curly locks? Embrace them. Nobody wants to live in fear of humidity or spend $500 a month on blow outs.

6) Shop everywhere. Don’t restrict yourself to certain stores or designers. It’s nice to have “go to” places, but to have a truly eclectic wardrobe you should consider vintage, resale, and online sites.

7) Consider a pop of color. I like to wear shoes or carry a bag that doesn’t completely match what I’m wearing. The unexpected placement of a bright color in your hand or on your feet makes your outfit look fresh and fun.

8) Don’t go au natural. No matter how drop dead gorgeous you are, we all look better with makeup. You don’t have to paint on a full face, but you must have groomed eyebrows, eyelashes (natural if you are lucky…fake if you’re me), and some lip gloss. You’ll just look more polished and accentuate your beauty.

9) Invest in good shoes that look amazing and feel good. I hear so many women say they don’t wear heels because they are uncomfortable. If that’s the case consider and open toe, a wedge or a high block heel instead of a pointy toe stiletto.

10) Keep a fashion emergency kit on hand. Always have safety pins, double sided tape, and nude silicone pasties on hand just in case.

Shelia Ybarra’s Hot Makeup Technique: “Bake” Your Face in 6 Steps

Sheila pic

Sheila Ybarra is an amazing makeup artist with over 25 years of experience. Shelia has been the official makeup artist to the Houston Texan Cheerleaders for over 10 years, and her work is featured in Miss USA, David Tutera of My fair Wedding, MTV, and E!Online. Not only is she a talented makeup artist, but she is also incredibly talented with hair styling.

I have personally had private one-on-one makeup lessons with Shelia. Her makeup lessons are incredible! She is very detail oriented, patient, and video tapes the lessons. She showed me what color combinations looked best with my skin tone and taught me the proper technique to apply the makeup with brushes. Her makeup lessons have made me feel more confident and less stressed when I apply my makeup. I also love and use Shelia’s professional makeup line, luxury makeup brushes, and skin care products. Shelia has 6 tips that she shared on one of the hottest makeup techniques “baking.”

Have you tried the hottest trending makeup technique called “baking?”

Shelia Baking Image

Don’t worry, we’re not talking about getting into the kitchen and making your own beauty products. Baking is the latest makeup technique to take over YouTube and Instagram. Actually, it is not a new technique at all, but rather a tried and true way to create a smooth, highlighted, creaseless finish. This technique is not for everybody. I would not suggest it on dry or flaky skin. If you have a normal to combination skin, this technique is perfect for you! Here’s how you do it:

1. Start with a flawless canvas by exfoliating and moisturizing the skin. Apply foundation all over the face with a damp beauty blender patted into the foundation. A matte finish foundation is the best to use for this look. Stipple the moist sponge all over the face to create a light finished coverage. Do not forget to blend down the neck and into the ears.

2. Next, apply and blend in a creamy highlight over your entire t-zone and under the eyes-Makeup by Sheila has the perfect shades to choose from. Remember this shade should be at least two shades lighter than your foundation.

3. Then apply a micro fine loose powder in Bamboo over where you highlighted to soak up any oils and add brightness. This yellow-based, warm-hued transparent powder will give you a beautiful summer glow, for tan or olive skin tones. For those with a fair to medium complexion, I recommend the Translucent powder because it doesn’t add color but helps enhance the natural highlights of the face.

4. Dip a flat face sponge into the setting powder and pack more loose powder onto where you have highlighted your face. This powder should be very loose and not pressed into the skin too deeply.

5. Let this all “bake” on your face for about 10 minutes. This allows your body heat to melt the makeup into your skin and set and highlight the areas where applied. Make sure to let it sit a little bit longer on your T-zone areas if your oily.

6. Using a blush brush, apply a small amount of powder to your brush, then dust away any excess powder as you blend any harsh edges. Make sure to powder and set the rest of the face.

Friday Glam: Taylor’s 5 Quick Makeup Tips

taylor pageant pic

Oldies but goodies… Some of the best makeup tips from the past you may have forgotten about. Refresh yourself and see if you have been following these simple makeup rules all along! I have also included some new tips to go along with them enjoy the read and be prepared for the next time you need these tips!

1) Puffy eyes no more. Reduce puffy eyes with cold water or applying cold compress (ice cubes in washcloth) 15 seconds on and 15 seconds off. This little tip has been around since October of 1987. A fresh take on this tip would be to put your makeup primer in the fridge and apply to your skin cold prior to makeup application for the same type of results. The cold primer will reduce puffiness around the eyes just like the cold compress or water would. You can also try the spoon in the fridge trick too.

2) Mascara that misses its mark. This is an old one, but easily forgotten. I still catch myself messing this up! DON’T lower your chin when applying mascara thats how it gets on your upper lid. This tip first surfaced in April of 1971 and I still forget to keep my chin up. A fresh take on this makeup tip from the past is a spoon behind the lashes held against the eye lid to block mascara from the eye or a small shield that they make just for this reason. I am sure you can pick on up at Sephora or just grab a spoon from the kitchen, your eyes with thank you one day!

3) Long lasting lips. To make lipstick last longer allow it to set for a few minutes after applying. Blot lips with tissue and dust with powder, then apply another coat. This tip first surfaced in April of 1963. I have had artists use this on me but they actually repeated and blotting and application process on more time through. So blotting twice and reapply 3 times. And now a days we even use eye shadows on the lips in shades of whites or golds to pop the lips or make them appear larger
than they really are!

4) Bleeding lipstick. To keep lipstick from bleeding apply a little canceler or highlighter around lips. This tip first came out not that long ago in October of 2011. But this tip will actually do two things it can make your lips look bigger depending on how you apply it as well as keep your lipstick from bleeding.

5) Fragrance much. Everybody likes to smell good but sometimes you can overpower the room. I have even had a perfume accident, spilling it all over me! No matter what the reason this tip is a good one to remember because you are bound to use it at least once in this lifetime and if you know this trick your friends will be impressed! If you overdo it with perfume, dab a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol on to your skin. The alcohol will cut the scent without altering it. This tip has been around saving us since September of 1992.

Hope you enjoyed this weeks’ blast from the past tips! Read, Enjoy and share!

Taylor’s Tips for Hot CHI Curls

Taylor chi picThis week was awesome!!! Not only did I model for CHI, but I also learned an incredible amount of cool information about Farouk Systems Inc., which makes Biosilk and CHI USA products. CHI is based here in Houston, and many of their products are produced in Houston. This amazing company is still family owned and operated, and is incredibly successful. This is a multi-million dollar a year company with over 2,000 employees and distributes to over 100 countries.

CHI is constantly innovating and working on new designs and products. CHI is the official sponsor of the Miss Universe pageant, and they created a product line called the Universal Beauty line this year. CHI is also the name behind Kardashian Beauty, which was recently launched.

Everything CHI makes is a quality product! I have fine straight hair that does not typically stand a chance with our Houston humidity. Their products made my straight, fine hair appear thick and curly! I am happy and excited to report my hair is still just a curly as it was Wednesday in the shoot!

This summer curls are HOT! You can recreate a similar glamorous, Beyoncé look with these products:

1. Farouk CHI Magnified Volume shampoo, conditioner, and spray foam creates magnified volume, incredible body, maximum fullness, and awesome shine.

2. My hair was styled with a CHI Oval Wand, which is not currently available to the public, but the CHI arc ceramic curling iron creates a similar curl with minimal effort. The CHI arc curling iron has a digital temperature screen which allows you to set the temperature. The arc only takes SECONDS to heat up. Also, the small clamp AUTOMATICALLY rolls hair. The Chi arc curling iron is an amazing curling iron, and most websites give this product 5 stars! You can check out this product at http://farouk.com/product/chi-arc/

3. After you create these beautiful curls, set your amazing curls with CHI Magnified Voluminous Finishing Spray.

I not only enjoyed working for CHI, but I also highly recommend their products! I have a great deal of respect for CHI and I love this Houston based company and hope to work with them again soon. Hope you all enjoy, like and, share my tips for HOT CHI Curls. Visit the blog next Friday for more glam tips. Wishing you all a fabulous weekend! xoxo Taylor

Better Bronzed: Taylor’s 2 Favorite Self-Tanners & Application Tips

Taylor Tanning Picture 2Alright Ladies NEWS FLASH…being pale and pasty is a thing of the past. Tan skin is in and it does not look like it is going anywhere! Many of you are probably saying to yourself Duh Taylor… But, if you are like me, and are blessed with “fair skin,” you have three options, laying out, tanning beds, or self-tanning! Two of the three cause skin cancer, horrible tan lines, burns, peeling and over time causes your skin to look like leather. That leaves most of us with the latter option, self-tanning.

Taylor’s 2 Favorite Self-Tanning Products

1. St. Tropez Self-Tanning Express Bronzing Mousse: This highly advanced product is brand new. This product is flying off the shelves and already received accolades from Allure Magazine! It’s a fast-acting tinted mousse that dries in 60 seconds and develops color in as little as one hour. It also features intelligent shade technology allowing you to select your desired shade. Just shower off when satisfied with your shade of tan. It’s dermatologist tested and is made from 100% natural tanning agents that contain no parabens, sulfates or phthalates. It will give you a streak-free tan with natural-looking results on all skin tones. It is available at Sephora for $44.

2. Neutrogena Micro Mist: This is my go to self-tanner. If I do not have time to run to the mall or my wallet is a little light, I use the dark shade 3 because I am very fair skinned. It is inexpensive at $9-$12 and can be found at any drug or grocery store. This ultra-fine mist covers evenly and is a no-rub application that will not clog pores. It’s one touch continuous spray works at any angle which is great for hard to reach places like your back and it dries in about 5 minutes. This product is oil-free and will not streak and for the price and availability this is a great option!

Taylor’s Self-Tanning Tips

1) Polish nails prior to tanning. Acetone will take off your tan!!!

2) Shave, exfoliate, and be completely dry before applying a self-tanner. I have found that for me the best way to exfoliate is with exfoliating gloves. You can pick these up at most any drug or grocery store. They are inexpensive and washable! They also allow you to really get those difficult spots well like your heels, toes, knees, and hands.

3) If you are using a rub on formula, I like to use latex gloves just as an added protection and a little piece of mind that my hands won’t look like I just left Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory. (if you know what I mean:) Also, remember to be conservative on knees and heels. You can always add, but it is harder to take away. If using a spray formula, make claws with your fingers when spraying hands, and always hold your bottle at least 6-12 inches from area of application to achieve even looking color.

4) After application, allow yourself to dry completely. I also picked up this neat trick from a spray tan professional. Add baby powder to a large makeup powder brush and pat it behind knees, inside elbows and under arms. This trick will help you avoid sweating the self-tanner off over night or feeling sticky before putting on clothes.

5) If you are going to sleep in your tan, wear something loose fitting to sleep in to prevent it from rubbing off.

Nikki Bartlett’s 5 Photo Ready Makeup Tips

Nikki Bartlett

Nikki Bartlett is an amazing makeup artist. She has been doing my hair and makeup for major events for several years. Nikki attended Sam Houston University and has a degree in Graphic Design, and she has over 8 years of experience as an accomplished Makeup Artist. Not only is she a talented makeup artist, but she is also incredibly talented at hair styling. I can give her a picture of any updo, and she creates it easily. Nikki has worked with many talented photographers and has 5 fabulous photo ready makeup tips.

1. Picture Perfect Complexion

SPF protects skin from harmful rays during the day, but photographs poorly because SPF creates a pale appearance. When you want amazing pictures, skip SPF.

2) Creating a Dewy Glow

The best time to moisturize is after you shower or after you wash your face. Moisturize when skin is still moist. Moisturizers are intended to lock moisture into skin, not add moisture.

3) Create a Gorgeous Pout

Line your lips with your favorite lip liner. Then, fill them in with the same lip liner. Add your favorite lipstick over the lip liner. This will create the appearance of beautiful full lips.

4) Use Contouring to Create a Slimmer Nose

Many women confuse bronzers for contour. These are two very different things! Bronzers contain a slight shimmer to a full on shimmer and contour is a flat matte color. Bronzers should be applied to tops of cheekbones and center of nose for a dewy glow. However, contour should be placed under cheekbones and around the hairline to frame and warm-up the face. Contour is also used on the sides of the nose, which will create a slimmer appearance.

5) Long Lush Lashes

The trick to making your eyes look bigger and more open is sometimes not with eyeshadows. Your lashes are key for this trick. Curl really well with a good quality lash curler. Nikki recommends using Shu Uemura. Then, add a good layer of mascara. Increase drama by adding a second layer of mascara to outer lashes.

You can visit Nikki Bartlett’s website at http://www.blushingbeautybynikki.com/ . Appointment requests can be submitted online or by phone at 281-704-5634.
