Haute Fashionistas VegOut at Neiman Marcus

On March 2nd 2017, Neiman Marcus was packed with Houstonians for Recipe for Successes’ Dress for Dinner event. This event was chaired by Tammie Johnson and her daughter Brittney Randolph. Houstonians packed Neiman Marcus on a Thursday evening for an evening of fun, food, art and fashion. The evening began with a cocktail reception of amazing appetizers by Chef Antoine Ware of Harold’s Restaurant, Bar & Terrace. Then, a lucky bidder won an extraordinary work of art entitled Manolo Blahnik Picnic, created by Bennie Ansell. The evening was followed by an incredible runway fashion show featuring Haute Hippie and a personal appearance by the designer Cady Vaccaro.

The evening continued for VIPs to a fabulous vegetarian dinner created by hot Houston chef, Henry Hopkes from Union Kitchen. During the dinner, Recipe for Success Founder, Gracie Cavnar, encouraged guests to download the VegOut app and eat 30 different veggies in 30 days.

All proceeds from the event benefited Recipe for Success Foundation’s efforts to teach kids healthy eating habits, to ensure that all Houstonians have access to affordable healthy food, and create a culture where nutritious food is shared, appreciated and celebrated. Houston Texans & Socialites Masquerade for a Cure-Jamie’s Hope 4th Annual Gala

On October 23, 2015, “Old Hollywood Glam Attire” and masks were worn by guests who attended one of the most anticipated, celebrity packed, fundraising events in Houston- the fourth annual Jamie’s Hope Foundation Masquerade for a Cure Gala. The Jamie’s Hope team works year-round to support personalized medicine research at M.D. Anderson.

Upon arrival at the Corinthian, guests were greeted by a mob of paparazzi decked out in 1940’s attire and a duo of live Oscar statues flanking the grand staircase. Passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails flowed as a solo artist entertained the crowd, a magician kept the surprises coming and Marilyn Monroe mingled with guests. The main event kicked off with The Richard Brown Orchestra welcoming everyone into the ballroom. Houston Texans football player guests included: Brian & Megan Cushing, Garrett & Ericka Graham, Chris & Jenny Myers, Chester & LaToya Pitts, Kevin & Caroline Walter, and John & Amanda Weeks.

Houston’s favorite weather girl, KHOU’s Chita Johnson, and former original Houston Texan, Chester Pitts, emceed the evening. Houston Texan’s former all-pro center, Chris Myers, took the stage as auctioneer and raised nearly $20,000.00. The foundation honored, 3-year supporter, Bob Allen who is battling a rare form of T-Cell Lymphoma. Jamie’s Hope presented Dr. Tsimberidou with a check for $101,000.00, displaying the funds raised in 2014 for targeted therapy research.

Fight Cancer with Fashion: Couture for the Cause

My family has been personally touched by cancer. My mother was a breast cancer survivor, and my grandfather had prostate cancer. I truly understand how devastating cancer is for the individual who is suffering and the family. I support many charities: however, charities that raise money for cancer patients are very near and dear to my heart.

On September 24th, 2015, I attended a VIP kick-off party for Couture for the Cause, which was generously sponsored by Toni and Mike Baches, and hosted at Veritas restaurant in Sugar Land. This is the sixth annual event for this fabulous cause. This event is going to be amazing this year and is —“A White Haute Affair!”

What is Couture for the Cause?: The money raised for Couture for the Cause helps the American Cancer Society fund programs and services for cancer patients and their families, as well as cancer research. Couture for the Cause raised $255,000 for the American Cancer Society last year. The money makes a real difference to thousands of people in our community, and even more in the greater Houston area and the nation.

Who: The American Cancer Society and Wealth Design Group have joined together for this year’s 6th Annual Couture for the Cause.

Helping Houston Sex Trafficked Children: Love to Give Back Affair

On September 19, 2015, Staci and Dr Quang Henderson hosted Love to Give Back Affair in their beautiful home in Memorial. The event chairs included: Staci Henderson Bela Thacker, Amanda Abiassi, Angela Lipsey, Neera Patidar, Jean Wilson, and Chiara Casiraghi. Courtney Gilmore with KPRC served as the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Over 150 fashionable guests attended and came red-carpet ready in boho-chic attire. The guests enjoyed a lovely evening and came together to help end child trafficking and exploitation.

The amazing, generous guests opened up their hearts and pocket books to purchase auction items and raised over $20,000 for Love146. Although Love146 is an international 501 non-profit human rights organization to help end child sex trafficking, Love146 is focusing on Houston child sex trafficking prevention and awareness. Cristopher Grady who is a Strategic Partnerships Coordinator at Love146 spoke about the organizations’ involvement with Houston child sex trafficking awareness and prevention. Dr. Melissa Bailar, a Professor in the Practice of Humanities and the Associate Director of the Humanities Research Center at Rice University spoke on sex trafficking.

Sex trafficking prevention and awareness, especially with Houston victims is near and dear to my heart. As a recent graduate with a Masters of Liberal Studies from Rice University, I wrote my 100 page Capstone/dissertation on America’s Sex Trafficked Children: A Study of the Victim—Trafficker Relationship from Victim’s Responses. During my research, I volunteered in a safe house and personally worked with traumatized victims who were sex trafficked children. Sex trafficking in Houston is a huge problem, and I love Love146.

The Love to Give Back Affair hosted at Dr. Quang and Staci Henderson’s home increased awareness for Houston child sex trafficking and raised funds to help support this fabulous cause. I had the opportunity to ask Chester Pitts the following questions about his charity- CPCF:

1. Why did you choose this particular charity?

“The stars had to align,….I had to be passionate about however I chose to give back. My mom instilled the value of music in me and my siblings at a very young age, I believe it was a big difference in my upbringing and being successful. Most athletes’ foundations tend to focus on health and wellness, we wanted to set ourselves a part and be distinct. There had to be a need/problem or a broken system. So understanding what helped me and understanding the need, choosing to give back to the arts was a no brainer. There are always budget cuts for Arts programs-visual performing, music, dance, culinary and many more. What I have learned is that there is real value for kids and brain development for kids involved in the arts somehow; stats and numbers don’t lie. Kids that have the Arts are smarter, better students, and more productive.”

2. How many students has your charity assisted?

“Over 600 students with 150 to 200 students being helped this year.”

3. What do you hope to see the charity doing in the future?

“CPCF’s top goal is to find a way to get the Arts written back into the school district budget because every child should have access, and their best shot at being the most productive citizen possible.”

Touchdown! Houston Texans Support an Amazing Charity

The Neon City of Lights Gala kicked off their inaugural, annual event benefitting Project 88 Foundation on April 24, 2015, at Ecclesia Houston. This was definitely a fashionable event—the women wore beautiful, colorful cocktail dresses, and many gorgeous pageant ladies were in attendance supporting the cause. Impressively, for a first time event the benefit was completely sold-out with over 400 supporters in attendance. Ericka and Garrett Graham founded Project 88 Foundation, which is a non-profit organization. There are a few things you need to know about this impressive, gorgeous, power couple—Garrett Graham is Houston Texans tight end, and wears No. 88, and his wife, Ericka, has a heart of gold.

This event scored a touchdown with all the guests from the very beginning with the cocktail reception. During the cocktail reception, guests were able to mix, and mingle and have photo opportunities with many of the most popular Texans football players including: Garrett Graham, Brian Cushing, Chris Myers, Duane Brown, Randy Bullock, Jon Weeks, Kareem Jackson, Shane Lechler, Cody White, Ben Jones, and Owen Daniels. This event opened with the sounds of DJ RED, and an amazing paint jam performance featuring the renowned artist Dan Dunn. While the supporters enjoyed dinner, the most incredible emcees Devi Dev, and Chester Pitts welcomed, and entertained the crowd. Of course, all benefits have live auctions, but this auction was exceptional because many of the auction items were signed Texans memorabilia. After the auction, the dance floor was packed when the popular 80’s band-The Spazmatics entertained the crowd. Antoinette Latham, owner of Brand Idea Group helped start the foundation, and managed the rockin’ party as the event manager. The event chairs included Hannah and Cal McNair, and Chris and Lisa Seay. Impressively, this inaugural event raised over $200,000.

Unquestionably, this was an incredibly fun, memorable, and entertaining event, but most importantly this event was for a fabulous cause—Project 88 Foundation. After working as a teacher with low-income students, Ericka decided to help tackle educational inequality, and strive to improve the lives of underserved Houston children by offering educational opportunities that they were not receiving. The funds from this event will provide at least 8 of the lowest performing HISD schools with full-time, certified, and trained college advisors for the upcoming school year. Impressively, 10 Eagle U Leadership Camp scholarships will also be provided.

Ericka supports the efforts of her talented husband on the field, but she is also dedicated to making sure the two of them make a difference in their new hometown, Houston. According to Ericka, “At Project 88 Foundation, we are aware that many Houston-area students lack access to information about going to college, and many students in Houston have never considered college as a possibility.” This fabulous new charity, Project 88 Foundation that Ericka and Garett Graham founded will help many low-income Houston children achieve their dream of going to college.

The Neon City of Lights Gala was an amazing event for a great cause. This is definitely a fun charity event with the most Texans players at a charity event in Houston. How Does the Largest Closet in America Help Women?

On April 16, 2015, Theresa Roemer who has the largest closet in America invited women into her home and closet to raise money for The Women’s Home. For over 50 years, The Women’s Home has been helping women who have experienced homelessness because of mental illness, abuse, or addiction. The Women’s Home provides residential treatment and transitional housing. Over 90% of women who participate in this program for six months or longer leave with income and housing.

Women brought their gently used high end and designer items to Theresa’s home to donate them for a runway show and shopping event that benefits The Women’s Home. This event is the 6th annual renew and reDo fashion show, which will be held on August 19, 2015 at the Wortham Grand Foyer. Mark your calendars this is an amazing opportunity to purchase fabulous designer clothes at deep discounts for a great cause. This awesome event is all about women helping women. Chau Nguyen is the Manager of Community Involvement at the Women’s Home and the event chairs are Sneha Merchant and Mandy Kao, and Theresa Roemer is recognized as the Fashion Icon.

Not only did Theresa open up her home and closet to help this cause, but she also geneously donated a $10,000 Oscar de la Renta gown, and 10% of her collection’s proceeds, True and Real, to benefit the cause. The Women’s Home is truly a great charity and this event at Theresa’s beautiful home will help many women who are struggling with homelessness, mental illness, abuse, and addiction. Sexy and You Know It–Jio’Zei Collection: Interview with Jio’Zei

I had the pleasure of viewing Jio’Zei Reyes collection at Omar Marcos’s—Runway For the Cure Houston on April 9, 2015. I absolutely love Jio’Zei’s suits, and I do not even wear suits. However, I would purchase suits from the Jio’Zei collection because they are sexy, sophisticated, and modern. They truly could be worn at a cocktail party, women’s luncheon, or at the office, which is a rare combination. In addition to gorgeous suits, Jio’Zei’s collection consists of beautiful dresses in striking colors, which present a modern feel. I am impressed with Jio’Zei’s unique, ability to create a stylish image with the use of color and fit.

After viewing the collection, I scheduled an interview with designer—Jio’Zei Reyes. I discovered that he was born in Hawaii, and he comes from an interesting background—Brazilian, and Japanese. He learned to sew from his mother who taught him how to create countless stiches with intricate design detail. In addition to inspiration from his mother, Jio’Zei Reyes’ has been inspired by various designers, which include Dior and Haider Ackerman. According to Jio’Zei, “I like to accentuate a women’s feminity with a modern twist.” Although, this is a difficult challenge, I believe that Jio’Zei has achieved this unique balance.

Jio’Zei is an accomplished designer: he received a Paris American Scholarship and studied Haute Couture in Paris. In addition, Jio’Zei is also an accomplished academic: he graduated from Rice University with a Toxicology and Environmental Science degree, and also has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. For a brief time, Jio’Zei worked in pharmacology. However, he quickly chose to pursue his true passion—fashion.

Incredible Demartini Collection-Interview with Breccia Demartini

I had the opportunity to view the beautiful Demartini collection at the Runway for a Cure Houston on April 9, 2015. I loved the collection’s vibrant colors, and the very wearable, but also sophisticated-look. The Demartini Collection is versatile because separates can be easily mixed, and matched. In addition, Demartini’s collection also offers resort sophistication as well as designs for the working-woman with a modern twist. After viewing this amazing collection, I really wanted to get to know the designer—Breccia Demartini personally.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Breccia Demartini. She shared her personal background information with me, and the inspiration for her collection. Breccia Demartini’s passion for fashion began as a small child. Breccia grew up in the vibrant city of Houston, and has a strong Italian family support system that inspired her love for colors, and textiles.

Breccia’s love for fashion fueled her desire to move to Australia when she was 23 years old. While living in Australia, Breccia attended the School of Fashion and Textiles – RMIT University in Melbourne. In addition to her training at school, Nasia Vlassopoulos trained Breccia to become proficient in threading a needle without even looking, pattern making, and sewing with confidence.

In 2012, Breccia Demartini returned to Houston and decided to further her design education at the Art Institute of Houston where she is currently studying Fashion Design, and Fashion and Retail Management. This September was an incredible turning point for Demartini—Breccia showed her debut collection during New York Fashion Week. Shortly thereafter, Demartini and 3 other student designers from the Art Institute of Houston were showcased at the Wortham Theater Center. Because of all this publicity, Demartini’s beautiful creations have shown on many runways, and are adored by Houston fashion lovers.

I asked Breccia’s what her inspiration was for the Spring/Summer collection. She explained that during her travels to the Canary Islands: the beautiful water, architecture, people, and fabrics influenced this collection. According to Demartini, “I want to market to the everyday entrepreneurial woman, by taking masculine menswear, restyling it, making it sexy, and sophisticated without being boxy.” Demartini’s cultural influences throughout the years have greatly influenced artistic beauty in her designs. Demartini explained, “fashion is not about the cloths, it is about the journey the cloths create.”

I love Demartini’s personal philosophy, and style. Price points are affordable from $89-$1300. This makes her a great designer for the cost-conscious woman.
