Twenty-six of Houston’s most stunning ladies took to the stage to compete for the title of Miss Houston on April 4., 2015. Nicole O’Brian Lassiter and Albert Soliz were the emcees for the pageant. The Miss Houston judges included: Dr. Charles Anders Johnson, Cicely Reid, Carmen Maria Montiel, Julie Pratz, and Erik Bechtol. Only one of the gorgeous ladies could take home the crown. The beautiful Thamer Kay Favor who is also well poised, intelligent, and articulate was crowned Miss Houston. She has competed in pageants for ten years, and graduated from Texas State University with a Public Relations degree and a minor in Leadership Studies.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the newly crowned, Miss Houston, Thamer Kay Favor. I asked what she was looking forward to the most as Miss Houston. Thamer, said, “I really can’t pinpoint just one thing I’m looking forward to. When I think of the entirety of the year I have just been given, the opportunities and possibilities overwhelm me with excitement. The title is a vehicle that allows you to do as little or as much as you are willing to do. I have a lot of energy and I want to hit the ground running and use the title as a springboard to bring more awareness to the different charities and organizations that I have been working with which include: Ronald McDonald House, Dec My Room and Crime Stoppers, to name a few. Now, that the shock of winning has started to subdue, I have started planning my schedule leading up to Miss Texas USA. I have been given the greatest gifts from the best sponsors in the entire world and I want to utilize them in my preparation for Miss Texas USA. It’s been a long time dream of mine to have ‘Houston’ across my sash while competing, and now that I do, I want to win it for Houston!”

Of course, preparing for the pageant requires a great deal of shopping and sponsorship. The fashion pageant sponsors included Tootsies, Elizabeth Anthony Collection, To The Nines Boutique, Muzzie’s Couture, Think Twice Fashions, Urban Rocks, Sakowitz Furs, and Rupa Kandial Alterations. The contestants have to look their best and Eric Vaughn of Estilo Salon and Spa keeps many contestants looking fabulous! Select Studios Photography captures the contestants best looks. Many contestants train with Nicole O’Brian Lassiter with Bee Your Best, Inc.: Nicole assists the contestants with modeling, poise, and presentation training.

During my interview with Thamer, I also asked her what suggestions she would give contestants who are competing in pageants, Thamer said, “I would tell them to be themselves through and through. This year I did exactly what I wanted to, and I left my heart out on that stage. Let me tell you, it was totally nerve wrecking to completely let your guard down and allow everyone to see you as you are, especially when you are in a pageant and you know you are being judged… but, it is a freeing experience. Whether I won or not, I knew I had done my best and I was going to walk away with absolutely no regrets. And because of that mindset, I allowed myself to relax. I enjoyed every second of that weekend, no sleep, and all. Let’s face it, pageants are completely subjective and only one woman can win, but if you do that, you will for sure walk away a winner. You will be crowned with your own invisible crown of confidence, and you will win the most invaluable prize that can never be taken from you!”

Thamer is definitely prepared for the Miss Texas competition. The titleholder becomes a representative of the pageant for one year, meeting many new people, participating in official charity and social events, potentially appearing on television, and gaining the education, and experiences to help her future career goals. The Miss Houston/Teen Pageant and Miss Kemah/Teen pageants are independently conducted, and produced by BayStar productions. Denise O’Brian is an official recruiter to Miss Texas USA and Miss Texas Teen USA. Denise is also the producer/director of the Miss Kemah/Teen pageant. For pageant information, contact
